The Waitaki District is in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. The region stretches from the Southern Alps to the Ocean, from Lake Ohau to Oamaru. The Waitaki Whitestone aspiring Global Geopark showcases the significant geology in the Waitaki District such as Claycliffs, Elephant Rocks, Anatini and Moeraki Boulders, along with our heritage seen in the beautiful limestone architecture of Oamaru. Aspects of early Maori culture and European settlers are showcased throughout the Geopark together with the delightful wildlife of Little Blue Penguins and Fur seals. Serving up the best of local Geo-gastronomy at restaurants such as Cucina, Fleurs Place, and Riverstone Kitchen. Participation in numerous recreation activities are available include Skiing, Gliding, jetboating, fishing, walking and of course cycling on New Zealand’s longest cycle trail, the Alps 2 Ocean, which winds its way through New Zealand’s only Geo-wonderland - ready for you to discover.
